THANK YOU for your interest in volunteering for Ironman Wisconsin!
Event Date: Sunday, September 7, 2008
How to Volunteer: Carefully review the duty descriptions and note any required qualifications for the area you wish to volunteer.
Each volunteer must register individually. *Any group volunteering must register each person.
Once you have signed up for a shift you are automatically assigned to that shift. Feel free to sign up for as many volunteer duties as you wish throughout the day, but please do not sign up for two areas that require you to be at during the same time frame.
After you register your Ironman captain will contact you before August 30th to provide you with further information.
Swim Portion Volunteer Opportunities:
Jet Ski: Volunteers provide their own jet ski large enough to hold his/her self and one lifeguard. Will slowly traverse swim course for entire event and if necessary assist with a rescue. One volunteer training session required.
Boats: MUST PROVIDE OWN MOTORIZED BOAT. Motorboat volunteers must provide a boat on which 1-2 lifeguards can be stationed throughout the morning swim. Must have anchor and life jackets. One volunteer training session is required.
Kayak:
"Kayak volunteers have many roles on the swim course. They will be positioned around the entire course, and help guide straying swimmers back onto the course and keep spectator boats off the course. Kayakers are often the first point of contact for swimmers who are seeking assistance. Kayaks frequently provide a resting place for swimmers to momentarily catch their breath or massage out a cramp. Most importantly, kayaker have the lead responsibility for detecting swimmers in distress, making the initial contact, and, if needed, initiating a rescue. Kayakers must provide their own boat, paddle, whistle, and PFD. Ironman is unable to loan any kayak equipment. Prior kayaking experience is required."
Diver description: Certified divers are required for search and recovery only. Will be placed on boats. Proof of certification required.
Lifeguards: Lifeguards will be stationed on powerboats, jet-skis, or rescue boards on the swim course. They are responsible for recognizing distressed athletes, recovering them from the water, and transporting them to a powerboat for removal from the water. Lifeguards also provide the first line of medical care for injured or ill athletes. A current lifeguard and CPR certification is required.
