How to Volunteer:
Carefully review the duty descriptions and note any required qualifications for the area you wish to volunteer. 


Each volunteer must register individually. *Any group volunteering must register each person.

Once you have signed up for a shift you are automatically assigned to that shift. Feel free to sign up for as many volunteer duties as you wish throughout the day, but please do not sign up for two areas that require you to be at during the same time frame.

After you register your Ironman captain will contact you before August 30th to provide you with further information.
 


Bike Portion Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Food Course Delivery:
    Duty includes driving along the bike or run course and delivering food and beverages to volunteers along the course. Teams of two will use a vehicle (must provide vehicle) on the bike course and ATVs to navigate the run course (Ironman will provide). Extensive knowledge of the Madison area required.
  • Draft Marshall:
    Enforces the official USA Triathlon rules and regulations of the Ironman Triathlon as directed by the Head Official. You will observe the swim course, be a passenger on a motorcycle during the bike course, and either be assigned a static location or riding your bike during the run course to observe for and report rules violations. Certification as a USAT official required. Training and certification is available as needed. Saturday preparations and meetings, and Sunday race day availability required.
  • Bike Aid Station Special Needs:
    The special needs area is where the athletes have the option of receiving a bag they have packed themselves on the bike portion of the race. Volunteer duties include; spotters that relay race number of approaching athletes to announcers with megaphones, announcers are stationed with megaphones to announce race numbers to bag finders. Bag finders will physically locate the appropriate bag and hand off to the bag givers. Bag givers will physically hand bags to athletes. This station is located near Fireman's Park, Verona.
  • Bike Course Marshals:
    The primary role is to "Point" the bikes in the proper direction and to ensure athletes stay on the designated race course. You will be stationed at a turn, corner, or intersection along the bike course to help direct the athletes to stay on the bike course. Major intersections will have police support to direct vehicular traffic. Sunday race day availability is required. The day will be broken into different shifts for each area. **You will have the ability to sign up for a specific intersection when registering to volunteer. If you are unsure of the exact location of the intersection, you will receive more information and a map at a later date.
  • Bike Aid Stations:
    Serve food and water to athletes at designated spots along the course. Bike aid station locations are:
    1. Whalen Rd
    2. Sugar River Rd
    3. Verona High School
    4. Mt. Horeb
    5. Cross Plains
  • Bike Sag Wagon:
    Sag drivers patrol the course and provide non-medical, non-technical support for Ironman bike riders. Sag drivers will provide transportation to the nearest aid station for riders that drop from the race. Volunteers will also transport athletes that drop out and their bike from the Verona collection point to the Monona Terrace. Drivers will be responsible for the accountability and reporting of race dropouts to Ironman central as well as the return of bikes and equipment to the bike check in/out at the Monona Terrace.
  • Bike Tech Support:
    Tech Support drivers patrol the course with a certified Bike Tech from Inside Out Sports and provide technical support for Ironman bike riders.
